Nigel Farage has made it his long-term goal after announcing a sensational return to frontline politics yesterday as leader of the insurgent party.
It would mirror events in Canada when a party called Reform effectively took over the traditional Conservative party around 20 years ago.
Speaking on Times Radio, Mr Neil said: "It is now no longer just idle or even stupid speculation that at some stage the Reform party post the election could mount a takeover of the Conservative Party."
The veteran broadcaster added: "The Conservative party in Canada was left with two seats after the election, bad as it's going to be for the Tories I think they'll probably end up with more than two. "But the people that did all the damage to them was the Reform party and in the end basically the Reform party did take over the Conservative party.
"They kept the Conservative branding but it was a new party and it took a generation to rebuild.
"I think that will be very much on the minds of Conservatives today.
"If this was to happen it would be historic. The Conservative Party is the longest-running continuous most successful political party in the democratic world."
Mr Farage has declared his goal is to take over the Conservative Party rather than join it.
He told ITV's Good Morning Britain: "You can speculate as to what'll happen in three or four years' time, all I will tell you is if Reform succeed in the way that I think they can, then a chunk of the Conservative Party will join us - it's the other way around."
He pointed to Canada, where "Reform did a reverse takeover of the Conservative Party, rebranded it and Stephen Harper - who was elected as a Reform MP - became the Canadian prime minister for 10 years".
He said: "I don't want to join the Conservative Party, I think the better thing to do would be to take it over."
