You're a fascist!

Fascist? It takes one to know one ByNiall McCrae –

WE ARE living through drama, and tension is rising. Those of us who cherish freedom and resist tyranny must try to stay calm under pressure. Last week I wrote on testy exchanges while distributing The Light paper in Eastbourne, and now I recount an instance of vitriolic harassment in my East Sussex home town of Bexhill-on-Sea.

‘Fascist!’

I turned and saw a woman in her 50s stomping towards me.

‘Yes, you – you’re a fascist.’

I was pulling a trolley holding The Light papers and yellow boards (neither on display) towards the market square, where we congregate for a monthly outreach. This person obviously knew where I was going and what I would be doing. Reaching me, she continued her invective, leading me to comment on how she was casting aspersions while not knowing me. She stood in front of me, pointing her finger.

‘I know what you are. You’re a nasty, evil, hateful fascist.’

Taken aback at this targeted onslaught, I asked her what she means by fascism.

‘Fascism is a system of oppressing individuals.’

I offered my definition, of government working with private corporations to impose totalitarianism, but she didn’t let me finish my sentence. I mentioned Mussolini, hoping that by characterising real fascism we might have a dialogue in which we agreed a mutual stance. But she denied me any opportunity to find common ground, simply telling me that I know nothing.

‘Fascism – it’s what you are.’

Distracted, I hit a lamppost with the trolley and a bundle of papers fell off. She laughed, and began walking back. ‘You’re a lovely person, aren’t you?’ I asked rhetorically.

‘Yes I am – unlike you. Drop dead!’

The sun was shining but this was a very unpleasant start to the day. I’m happy to report that we had a good session, giving almost four hundred papers to the people of Bexhill, with a high number of toots from passing cars.

Hecklers are a tiny minority nowadays, and they seem to know that. They hear (as do the counter-protesters outside migrant hotels) the cacophony of car horns; they sense the positive vibe among volunteers and their friendly chats with passers-by; they see The Light papers enthusiastically taken. This makes them defensive and reactionary about their beliefs, because they know that the edifice of the official narrative is cracking. They are beginning to feel that they’re on the losing side.

About an hour into our session I went for a jaunt with a colleague along the shopping street, each with an armful of papers. The woman who had harassed me went past, and called me an idiot. This was quite a downgrading from fascist, but I took the opportunity to warn her that she had crossed a line with the words she used earlier against me: specifically, imploring me to ‘drop dead’. She cackled at that, telling me that she knows the law better than I do, as she’s a solicitor.

I don’t believe her, because no legal practitioner would launch an unprovoked verbal attack on a stranger in the high street. Would they? I’m not so sure now, having witnessed the immoral behaviour of doctors during the covid regime.

Readers may wonder whether there is something about me that contributes to these incidents. Possibly, but another of our group was also called a fascist, this time by a younger woman.

Is this intense anger and aggression caused by the covid jabs? I don’t know, but clearly there is an escalation in this behaviour, from people who consider themselves to be intelligent, compassionate, progressive and liberal. How they must hate seeing those flags on lampposts in every town.

The anti-fascists are determined to get Nazi scum off our streets. They should stay at home, then.
