STATEMENT ON IRAN from Cllr Robin Tilbrook

The Iranian Islamic Revolution and the consequent creation of the Iranian Islamic Republic are really the product of the United States government being a poor ally to the Shah of Iran whom the CIA performed a coup for in the 1950s (and also murdered some leaders of Iranian democracy!)

The Americans have spent much time and effort since then trying to contain the Iranian Islamic Republic. They then destroyed Iran’s main regional opponent which was Sadam Hussein’s regime in Iraq. 

They have now had a significant role in creating the currently unfolding disaster in the Middle East.

Nevertheless the idea of the Iranian Islamic Regime having nuclear weapons is very alarming, given the extreme Islamism of Iran’s leadership and also their hatred, not only of Israel, but also of the United States the “Great Satan” and, more eccentrically, of the United Kingdom, calling Britain the “Little Satan”. 

The parts of the British State that are in favour of assisting in attacks on Iran should reflect on the fact that Britain’s armed forces are now so small and badly equipped that any intervention would be purely symbolic and likely only to increase the exposure of British citizens to the risk of revenge attacks.

The British Government should stop pretending to posture on the world stage and instead focus its efforts on looking after our citizens, a task which the British State has proved appallingly negligent at for many decades!
